How Does a Creative Run a Business With No Money? - the Power of Soft Skills

When money is tight, even a good idea can feel out of reach. Materials cost money. Transport costs money. And your time needs to earn something too.

You may need to begin with a smaller version of the business you imagine.

1. Start with a skill you can sell now.
Look at what you can deliver using what you already have. A fashion creative might offer alterations, styling or wardrobe consultations before funding a collection. Choose something you can do well without expensive purchases.

2. Find the customer before spending.
Speak to potential buyers. Show a sketch, a sample or examples of your work. Ask what they need and what they would pay. Likes are encouraging; a confirmed order gives you something firmer to work with.

3. Agree on payment before you begin.
For commissioned work, request an upfront payment that covers the costs you must incur. Confirm the scope, delivery date, balance and cancellation terms in writing. Keep that money available to complete the order.

4. Keep your running costs small.
Work from home where practical, hire equipment when needed and use shared spaces. Make it easy for customers to see your work and contact you through WhatsApp Business or a simple online portfolio.

5. Give each payment a job.
Separate the money needed for delivery, business expenses and your own pay. Keep records, even in a notebook. A sale can look exciting until you calculate what it cost to fulfil.

There are limits to what you can start without capital. If a project needs equipment or materials you cannot yet afford, offer a service that helps you build towards it.

Start with one clear offer, deliver it well and use what you learn—and earn—to take the next step.

Remember Who you are!
