Life Lessons Being a Designer Has Taught Me

Being a designer has taught me lessons that reach well beyond clothes. So much of the process—starting, adjusting, making mistakes and trying again—has changed how I approach life.

1. I can start before I have everything figured out.
A sketch gives me somewhere to begin. The details develop as I work. I’m learning to give myself that same freedom in life, instead of waiting until I feel completely ready.

2. Changing direction is part of the process.
Sometimes a fabric doesn’t behave the way I expected, or a shape needs reworking. I have to respond to what is in front of me. There is value in being willing to reconsider a plan.

3. The details deserve attention.
A lining, a seam, the way something sits on the body—small things affect the whole experience. It has made me more aware of the care I bring to everyday things, including how I communicate and follow through.

4. I won’t be everyone’s choice.
People have different tastes, needs and budgets. I can listen to feedback and keep improving without treating every “no” as a judgement on my ability.

5. Good work takes patience.
There are stages I simply cannot rush. I need time to test, fit and finish properly. That has taught me to be more realistic about progress, including my own.

6. My time has value.
The finished piece carries hours of thinking, sourcing, making and adjusting. Design has taught me to recognise that work and speak more confidently about what it costs.

Perhaps the lesson I return to most is that I can make something with care and still find room to improve it. I’m allowed that same room myself.
